Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation
(Mahaska County)
Mahaska County and neighboring Marion County contain over 80% of the abandoned mine lands in Iowa. Unreclaimed abandoned mine lands are frequently high in acidity, poorly vegetated and impair water bodies with acidic runoff.
In 2008, Pathfinders is partnering to reclaim four sites in Mahaska
County: Boender, Herbert, Westercamp and Waal West.
Pathfinders has been able to apply for $100,000 federal Office of Surface Mining grant available to non-profits for reclamation activities.
